Aug 21, 2016 · Be sure to carry your 44 mag in a soft holster. I tried to draw my TC Contender in 44 mag and the deer heard the draw at about 12 yards. I think, I have made ever mistake that can be made while hunting with a pistol. I also tried to draw and cock the hammer on my S&W 686 and the deer heard all of that cylinder racket as I cocked the hammer. My original response, below, is about the carbine version. A friend has a G2 carbine and at least one original Contender in handgun configuration. He shot mostly .44 magnum out of the original Contender (16" barrel), and heavy .44 mag loads were definitely capable of inducing a flinch in some people.

The .357/44 Bain & Davis is a centerfire pistol cartridge designed ca. 1964 by Keith Davis, by partner and pistolsmith of the Bain & Davis Gunshop of San Gabriel, California. The purpose was to give improved velocity over the .357 Magnum by using the larger .44 Magnum case necked down to hold a 0.357 diameter bullet. I note that many of the shooters who claim the .41 Magnum is "too much" or "not enough" have never owned one and certainly haven't reloaded for the .41 Magnum. I was pleased with the S&W Model 58, the Model 57, the Thompson-Center "Contender" with 14-inch heavy barrel and the Ruger Blackhawk. This is a factory Thompson Center Contender and G2 Contender Barrel. Barrels for the Contender and G2 Contender are interchangeable, but not for use with Encore frames. They can be changed in seconds by removing the forend and tapping out the barrel/frame hinge pin. Drilled and tapped for scope mounts. No gunsmithing required.
